What specific ways have you and your spouse found to reserve time for each other since having a child with special needs? How do you continue to develop your relationship with your spouse?

Strengthening your relationship is paramount. As you’ll go through the ups-and-downs you’ll need to rely on each other. A couple of obvious answers: a) find a baby-sitter and go on a date; b) go to the Temple together. One other thing helped us: we set apart a time when we don’t talk about the kids at all. Be it in a date or just after putting the kids to bed, we sometimes declare “kid-free time zones”: we dedicate time to talk to and about each other, and just enjoy being together.
