Love Is Not All . . .

LOVE smAt a season when thoughts turn to love … both the commandment to give love and the powerful need to receive it.

An unattributed quote found in an old journal says … “The heart and soul of the gospel of Jesus Christ is love for others . . . all the rest is commentary.” That echos the message of Matthew 22:35-40 where a Pharisee (seeking to trip him up) asks Jesus, “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?”

A good friend, who is a Marriage and Family Counselor, spoke once of the “absolute screaming need for love” she encounters in her practice. The desperate need of each individual for love … and the power of the love we give … are married in the words of an honored American poet.

Be lifted by Edna St. Vincent Millay.

Love Is Not All

Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink
Nor slumber nor a roof against the rain;
Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink
And rise and sink and rise and sink again;
Love cannot fill the thickened lung with breath,
Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone;
Yet many a man is making friends with death
Even as I speak, for lack of love alone.
